Dropkick Murphys Freakin’ Own the Month of March

Full disclosure: I should say right off the bat that I’m a big Dropkick Murphys fan, like so many Bostonians and hooligans worldwide, so much so that I’ve often mentioned them here and managed to finagle this magazine to let me interview lead man Ken Casey. Not only does their music kick royal arse, but they’re a great story of hardworking local guys who play all over the globe and raise lots of money for charity here at home. And yet, with every new year there are groans whenever I suggest writing about them yet again, and even a part of me wearily wonders how this band is Continue reading >>>

by Tom Ziller • Jan 27, 2012 8:30 AM EST Kevin Garnett in his full Bostonian splendor tells everyone who will listen and Craig Sager that the Celtics have won a "ball fight" or perhaps a "bar fight" but in actuality just a basketball game against the Magic. Columbia students transcend fair-weather fandom

At the beginning of eighth grade, something happened for the first time since 1918: People started to care about the Boston Red Sox. If I had lived in Boston, this would not be anything new—Bostonians are some of the most die-hard fans out there. But in the suburbs of Minneapolis, the Bostonian diaspora is pretty minimal, and yet, one World Series win was enough to make more than a few bandwagoning middle-schoolers think wearing Curt Schilling jerseys that brought out their pimples was the coolest thing since pogs. From that fall onward, I was sure of one thing: Fair-weather Continue reading >>>

Regional dialects often amusing point Published 7:45pm Tuesday, January 24, 2012  CommentsA friend of mine from Massachusetts whom I worked with for thirty years while adjusting NFIP flood claims across the USA always amused me with his pronunciation of certain words. By the same token he often told me I amused him with my style of talking. The last time I saw him was during Hurricane Katrina and his Bostonian speech was even double funny because he brought with him a young man who was training to become a flood insurance adjuster. I could not help holding back with laughter listening to them talk.I Continue reading >>>

History: The Business of Harvesting Ice in Wakefield

The idea for harvesting ice as a commercial product is credited to Frederick Tudor, a Bostonian, whose first large scale sale of harvested ice was made in 1805 when he shipped 130 tons of ice to Martinique. In 1817, Tudor’s first commercial icehouse was established in 1817 on Fresh Pond in Cambridge. The industry was initially hampered by the difficulty of hauling tons of ice by ox carts, but with the coming of railroads, these difficulties were eased. Suddenly, many of the lakes on the east side of Massachusetts became opportunities for savvy investors; their ice was recognized as a commodity Continue reading >>>
