Big house, long commute

My wife Karen and I opted for the first strategy - buying a fixer-upper in Natick to avoid crazy commutes as we started a family. I have worked out of a home office since I left the Herald in 2008, ditching my daily drive into Boston. And Karen commutes to Newton, which still can take 45 minutes along clogged Route 9 and the Massachusetts Turnpike. Still, when it comes to commuting, we have a relatively good deal. The trade off, of course, was buying a fixer-upper near Natick center that has taken years of work - and some substantial money to contractors as well as a fair amount of sweat equity Continue reading >>>

What a great time to buy a restaurant in the greater Boston market!

Dennis Serpone, New England Restaurant Brokers The number of restaurant transactions is up by more than 50% going into the fourth quarter of 2013 over the same comparable time in 2012.The confluence of economic and market conditions spell 'opportunity' for the seasoned buyer. No matter if we're looking at vacant space, or an operating restaurant that has become available in good locations or conversely a losing business that the inexperienced operator bought in a less-than-desirable location, there is a buyer out there ready to make a deal. With casino license, Suffolk Downs would upgrade racing

Suffolk Downs officials still need a new partner, a positive result in a referendum of East Boston residents, and approval from the Massachusetts Gambling Commission before they can begin a transformation into a full-fledged casino and resort. If they’re successful in those areas, they have big plans for horse racing. “We have been steadfast in our commitment to thoroughbred racing and this plan illustrates the broad range of racing-related improvements that will greatly enhance the experience of our customers while also appealing to our horsemen and women who work and compete here,” said Continue reading >>>

GUEST OPINION: More treats for Greater Boston; more tricks for South Coast Rail

The week before Halloween, Gov. Deval Patrick is giving out transportation projects like candy: New Red and Orange line cars to calm those anxious commuters in Greater Boston who despair of seeing an end to the horror show that is commuting on the MBTA; electronic tolling that will prod drivers who haven’t gotten a transponder to get with the program; and straighter roads at the Allston tolls on the Mass Turnpike. But the South Coast Rail, the one apple Patrick would dearly love to give out, has worms in it. With little to say about concrete progress on South Coast Rail Continue reading >>>
