GRIFFIN COLUMN: Placing value on where we live

Where are the best places in the U.S. to live if you want to age successfully? If you guess cities in Florida or Arizona, you are wrong. New rankings broadcasted earlier this month on the PBS News Hour presented five choices among large metropolitan areas. You may be surprised to discover that our area, described as Boston-Cambridge-Quincy, Mass.–New Hampshire, finishes in fourth place, ahead of New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, which finishes only fifth. (Incidentally, the first three are Provo-Orem, Utah; Madison, Wis.; and Omaha-Council Bluffs, Neb./Iowa.) Who, Continue reading >>>

Homing in on pigeon racing

HERKIMER, N.Y. — At 6:35 a.m., under a blood-red sky, 1,075 pigeons sip water in a ventilated trailer in the Wal-Mart parking lot before the Greater Boston Homing Pigeon Concourse race to Boston. They are athletes, thoroughbreds of the sky, but they are also rookies, all born in 2013. I am an aging news veteran, and a victim of gravity. The weekly pigeon race begins in 25 minutes, and I am an unofficial entrant. Weeks earlier, while visiting Continue reading >>>

Even the rain couldn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 3,500 people who showed up at the St. John’s Prep campus early Sunday morning to take part in the 26th annual Walk for Hospice of the North Shore Greater Boston. “Despite the weather, family members, staff, volunteers, students and friends of HNSGB were in high spirits and the turnout seemed as strong as ever,” said Diane Stringer, executive president of HNSGB. Since donations are still arriving, there’s no way of coming up with an exact amount raised but Stringer estimates that the walk will Continue reading >>>

Cambridge Rindge Latin is moving closer to joining the Dual County League, a switch that could lead to the end of the Greater Boston League. According to Westford principal Jim Antonelli, Cambridge school officials had a preliminary meeting with their counterparts from the DCL in mid-August to discuss the potential move. The next step is for Cambridge to meet with other GBL schools and ask for a release from the league. GBL athletic directors are scheduled to meet next week. Though the process is complicated and can be time-consuming, the DCL wants Cambridge, and Cambridge wants the DCL, so what’s Continue reading >>>
