Greg Bialecki: Budget targets other parts of state

Gov. Deval Patrick’s budget, which has been criticized for its proposed income tax increase, is partly an effort to spread the wealth that Greater Boston has enjoyed to other parts of the state, his secretary of housing and economic development said yesterday. In a 90-minute interview with the Herald, Greg Bialecki said the gross state product in 2011 — the most recent year for which figures are available — was above the level in 2007, before the financial crisis.“But this recession has caused a lot of companies to rethink in Massachusetts,” Bialecki added yesterday, as Boston Scientific, Continue reading >>>

Boston just got more awesome

There is no Boston story that we all know, that defines us – that tells the world about what makes our scene unique. Perhaps it’s just plain old New England modesty, but it’s holding us back from greatness. We are terrible marketers of Greater Boston’s tech scene. We need to shout loud and proud about our successes, inventions and achievements. In doing so, we will attract more talent to our companies and drive more innovation. This kind of Boston branding will translate into so many other good things for our community. So today, a small group from that winter offsite a year ago, now loosely Continue reading >>>

Bowen’s ‘unlikely’ trip from Upton to Boston

For Jared Bowen, his "very unlikely’’ journey to covering arts for WGBH-TV and winning two Emmys began as a teenager watching the 5 ’clock news in his family’s living room in little, out-of-the-way Upton. He found "such allure’’ in news anchor Natalie Jacobson’s and Chet Curtis’ reports he became editor of the school newspaper at Nipmuc Regional High School, writing editorials about school affairs and reviewing the film "Groundhog Day.’’ "I think I always had a sense of what I wanted to do,’’ he said shortly before taping a segment of "Caught in the Act’’ for the Continue reading >>>

Coakley top executive material

Attorney General Martha Coakley told a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast Wednesday that government's role is not to pick business winners and losers but to create a competitive environment conducive to the development of new ideas and technological innovation.  How to do that will be one of several topics explored at an energy summit she'll convene this spring. Massachusetts has the nation's fifth highest energy costs, with price per kilowatt hour twice as much as many competitor states.  "Even if solutions are not obvious or easy, that doesn't mean they don't exist," she told Continue reading >>>
