Bridge North Span Shipping Up to Boston

The final piece of the deconstruction of the Memorial Bridge will be completed on Saturday night when the north span is transported to East Boston. According to Carol Morris, a spokesperson with Archer Western Contractors, the Cape Cod barge will transport the north span from Portsmouth Harbor to a metal recycling facility in the Greater Boston area on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Morris said seas and winds are expected to become more favorable on Saturday afternoon, which will make it easier for Archer Western Contractors to transport the north span. The middle lift span and south span were previously Continue reading >>>

In search of a top-notch nanny

“Almost all nannies start with their families — the families that employ them — within three months of a child’s birth,” said Susan Tokayer, a veteran social worker and co-president of INA. “So there is a steady supply, if you will, of new clients. And I would say the Boston area is an excellent example of a rich, fertile, market for nannies,” thanks in part to a young, well-educated populace and an array of local industries.

Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus to have intergenerational concert in Wellesley

For Wellesley resident Dr. Robert Ferrell, Monday nights are sacrosanct. That’s when he and roughly 70 other men from all around Greater Boston rehearse with Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. The non-profit ensemble, which performs repertoire ranging from Bach to Broadway and is now celebrating its 20th season, has a devoted following and has toured extensively in Canada and Great Britain, in addition to performances here.    However, it’s not just about artistic glory for Ferrell and his fellow singers in the chorus. A critical part of Saengerfest’s mission is to raise funds for Continue reading >>>

How Does Melrose’s State Education Funding Compare?

Chapter 70 funding is complicated and contentious, which makes for a controversial topic in most communities. The funding is given to every Commonwealth community by the state each year to help pay for education costs. Essentially, the state uses a formula to determine how much it’ll cost a community to educate its kids. Then it determines how much the community can raise in property taxes to pay for education. The state aid given is used to cover the difference. Communities can chip in more to educate kids without hurting its Chapter 70 funding total; the whole exercise is done to make sure Continue reading >>>

Developers make pitches for parcel near Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway

Both the YMCA of Greater Boston and planners for a New Center for Arts and Culture later gave up plans to build on ramp parcels due to the cost. The Boston Museum, a nonprofit group led by developer Frank Keefe, submitted a plan for Parcel 9 in a 2009 round of proposals, but MassDOT rejected all proposals at that time. At Wednesday's meeting, Keefe proclaimed the site, right on the Freedom Trail, “the best in the country.” The new plan calls for a 100,000-square-foot building designed by Cambridge Seven Associates, with brick on the Blackstone Street side transitioning into glass facing Continue reading >>>

TD Bank CEO announces plans to grow in Bay State

TD Bank Group plans to add five Greater Boston branches annually for years to come — and would expand even faster here if it could find space to do so, the firm’s CEO says. “I was telling (Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino): ‘If you could find me 10 more sites in Boston, we’ll do 10 more (branches) in Boston next year,’ ” TD Bank chief Ed Clark said today in a speech to the Boston College Chief Executives’ Club of Boston. Clark said in his remarks and in subsequent comments to reporters that the firm wants to add some 50 branches to its current roster of roughly 160 Bay State banks. He Continue reading >>>
