Greater Boston Food Bank hosts pantry at Boys & Girls Club

The Greater Boston Food Bank hosted a mobile food pantry at the Thomas Chew Memorial Boys Girls Club on Saturday morning. He added that the food bank is lucky “to have committed and compassionate partners, like the Boys Girls Club of Fall River, that work with us to help neighbors and friends who are hungry.” Colligan said the Greater Boston Continue reading >>>

Son of a Nabokov

The greatest literary memoir of the 20th century, Vladimir Nabokov’s “Speak, Memory,” ends with an emblematic image, that of Nabokov standing alongside his 6-year-old son Dmitri as they gaze at the ship that will carry them from France to safety. Over the preceding pages, the author has survived numerous losses and brushes with danger, fleeing not one but two totalitarian regimes: the Soviets and the Nazis. Irish pubs face closing time

DUBLIN — In recent times two of the main pillars of Irish life — the Catholic Church and the Fianna Fail political party — have proven vulnerable. Now a third appears to be in trouble. And its decline is perhaps most telling about the general state of the nation. According to industry figures, Ireland’s pubs are closing at the rate of one every two days. Since 2005, 1,100 have shut their doors for good. If you want a comparison that might resonate around Greater Boston, imagine cities like Medford, Malden and Somerville suddenly losing a large number of their sub shops and pizza places. So Continue reading >>>

Streaming hasn’t killed video store

Video stores these days seem to be about as popular as dial-up Internet. But don’t tell that to Lisa Landsverk, who stops by Hollywood Express in Cambridge at least three times a week. “I’d rather come support the movie store,” said Landsverk, 53, of Cambridge. “We learn about things that we wouldn’t watch otherwise.” With the rise of such services as Netflix and cable-on-demand, stores that rent DVDs and videos are dying. Blockbuster, which once boasted dozens of stores in Greater Boston and 4,000 nationally, now has a mere three locations inside Route 128. The company went bankrupt Continue reading >>>
