Charlestown group calls for MBTA community meeting on cuts

By Johanna Kaiser, Town Correspondent A Charlestown neighborhood group wants the MBTA to come to the community to discuss plans for cuts to services used by residents. The Charlestown Neighborhood Council at its monthly meeting Tuesday agreed to write the MBTA to oppose proposed service cuts and fare hikes and request a community meeting with T officials. The MBTA has released two proposals aimed at reducing a projected operating deficit of $161 million and $5.2 billion in debt, $3.6 billion of which was inherited from the state for projects that include the Big Dig. One proposal relies more Continue reading >>>

Kam Man opens new store in South Bay

Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff Preparations continue in the new Kam Man Farmers Market, on Monday. Super 88 may be long gone, but the region still has an appetite for Asian groceries. After a two-year legal battle, Wincent International, which operates the Kam Man Market in Quincy, will open its first Boston location Saturday on the site of a former Super 88 market in the South Bay shopping center. Wincent has been vying for the site since Super 88 filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. A Suffolk Superior Court judge ruled in August that Wincent could buy the site Continue reading >>>

Let T users pay

Passenger rail moves millions of people and provides untold jobs, and I would never want to see any of that reduced (“Menino critical of cuts, fare hikes on T,” Jan. 31). All of this comes at a price and most systems are subsidized. Again, no problem. But let the people of Greater Boston subsidize it. Don’t make me pay for the Green Line because I have to buy gas in North Adams to drive an hour each way to get to my job. The T isn’t available to me, so why should I pay for it? I’d rather pay an increased fare next time I visit Boston. — James Falandes, North Adams Continue reading >>>

Forecasters call for dry weather through the weekend; no storms in sight

By Alli Knothe, Globe Correspondent Don’t worry about checking the weather report this week. It’s going to be the same every day. Economic impact of Frozen Fenway: $28.8M

Here's another argument for northern MLB and MiLB teams to construct hockey rinks in the dead of winter: the economic impact of Frozen Fenway, the winter extravaganza in Boston, was a cool $28.8 million. The Red Sox installed an ice sheet on the Fenway Park field and scheduled various high school and college hockey games along with open skates for Boston residents. Over 10,000 fans attended the open skates, while 80,000 tickets were sold for the games. This level of attendance led to a valuation of the total spending impact for the city and the region of an Continue reading >>>

Babson eats up Bizarre Foods

You would think that when Andrew Zimmern comes to Babson, it's to talk about food. Or business, or entrepreneurship. He did talk about those things today – to a packed house of 350+ Babson entrepreneurs and friends from the Greater Boston food community. But he also talked about family, community, humanity – and travel. “The most important thing I do in my life is travel.” Standing in front of a wall of flags, speaking to an audience of over 50% international students, he could not have been more intuitively placed standing in his own living room. “I’m a better guy on the road… At Continue reading >>>
