Marion Barre: WMass not getting its fair share of road monies

Email Print Comments (0) To the editor: In the 1930s, Quabbin Reservoir was built to provide the primary water supply to Boston and greater Boston. This was only the beginning of the unfair distribution of resources between the eastern and western parts of Massachusetts. In 1964, the MBTA was established for the greater Boston area. In 2009 Gov. Deval Patrick placed the MBTA under the authority of the Massachusetts DOT. Fair? People in the greater Boston area can ride the T for a fee. Architects revere Sun design

Panel of nine prefers look of Sun's Massachusetts casino If architects who reviewed the two projects competing for the sole Greater Boston casino license were the final arbiters, Mohegan Sun would be sitting pretty. In June, nine architects convened by AIA Massachusetts, a chapter of the American Institute of Architects, unanimously found that Mohegan Sun's $1.3 billion plan for a Revere casino "was markedly superior in every design aspect" to Las Vegas-based Wynn Resorts' $1.6 billion proposal for Everett."The Revere design is playful, has two inviting entrances, is pedestrian friendly, Continue reading >>>

More Sellers Make Summer Sizzle

"The good news is that there are fewer (sellers) sitting on the sidelines than there were earlier this year," Ruffini says. Overall, June saw 8,418 homes hit the market across the state, a 13 percent jump over the same period in 2013, MAR numbers show. More listings, in turn, could also take some of the pressure off buyers, who are too often faced with bidding wars given the long-standing shortage of homes on the market, he says. And while the median home price in Massachusetts hasn't quite caught up to where it was during the housing bubble years in the mid-2000s, Ruffini is OK with Continue reading >>>

Tallying up the casino handouts

Does it matter that Mohegan Sun outspends Wynn? Casino handouts to local communities are becoming a hot issue in the competition between Mohegan Sun and Wynn Resorts for the Greater Boston casino license. Mohegan Sun is promising to hand out a lot more money to the 13 communities surrounding its proposed Revere casino than Wynn Resorts is offering the nine municipalities around its proposed Everett gaming palace. The handouts are different, so the variation between them is hard to quantify, but it appears Mohegan Sun is doling out about $52 million annually to local communities, while Wynn Continue reading >>>
