New Saugus High School sport develops a popular following in two short years

It all starts at the top. If a coach has that dynamic to attract youngsters to a sport like volleyball who many have played only in gym class, it has a chance to succeed on the high school varsity level. Pat Bemis has been an Algebra II and Integrated Math teacher at Saugus High School the last five years after graduating from Emmanuel College with degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Education. He grew up in western Pennsylvania, and started playing volleyball in the seventh grade. He continued his pursuit of the sport at Baldwin High School, just outside Pittsburgh, and then played it on Continue reading >>>

When it comes to high home prices, Greater Boston still near the top

For the price of one home here, you could buy nearly three houses in Orlando, where prices have more than 60 percent from their peak to $115,000.

At $319,000, we are back at 2002 levels. And that, frankly, was hardly a bargain year, with prices already spiraling upward.

If the Great Recession and its aftershocks can’t bring prices down here, what will?

DOMA and the High Cost of Government-Mandated Discrimination

Conservatives frequently talk about the cost of regulations. For instance, Freedomworks, a well-known conservative organization, published a piece called The Hidden Cost of Regulation. It said, "Complying with regulations is not cheap," noting that regulations aren't paid for by just corporations, but by "the entire economy." It notes that consumers pay higher prices as well, due to these regulations, and that they "act as a drag on economic growth." Allow me to add two other points Freedomworks did not mention, but which I believe they would agree with: 1) motives of the regulators do Continue reading >>>

By Rob CoxThe author is a Reuters Breakingviews columnist. The opinions expressed are his own. When is a merger-of-equals really a takeover? One easy way to tell is when the top brass get rich and undeserved paydays. There’s probably no better live example than the just-delayed sale of Massachusetts electric utility NSTAR. Its top five executives could feast on as much as $50 million in severance and change-of-control payments despite labeling their deal as one of mutual control for both sets of shareholders. As regulators probe the union more deeply, investors may want to do the same. It’s Continue reading >>>
