Out of control landlords

Here's an excerpt from a story posted on Cincinnati.com: Fourteen women went to Cincinnati landlord Henry E. Bailey seeking a secure place to live but instead Bailey sexually harassed them, federal authorities said. Over the course of two decades, Bailey would enter apartments without notice or permission, would touch the women and make unwanted sexual comments, would grant housing in exchange for sexual favors, or would take adverse action against tenants who rebuffed his sexual advances, the release said. If you are wondering, cases of housing discrimination continue to pop up every few weeks Continue reading >>>

Wayland teen experiences the rewards of volunteering

At the end of June, 14 students from Wayland and Natick took part in Good Shepherd Parish’s Boston Summer Service and Immersion Trip. It was a great experience for everyone involved. During our trip, we volunteered at a number of places in and around Boston – Noonday Farm (a self-sufficient organic farm that provides food for service agencies), Haley House (a Catholic worker house with locations in the South End and Roxbury providing many services including a soup kitchen, food pantry, low-income housing, job training and a cafe), Pine Street Inn (the largest center for homeless services Continue reading >>>

Mass. shark attack victim returns to beach

TRURO — A man bitten by a great white shark last month while swimming off a Cape Cod beach has returned to the scene. But he did not go in the water. The Cape Cod Times reported that Christopher Myers, whose legs were injured in the July 30 attack, was greeted by several people who recognized him at Ballston Beach in Truro. Myers, a native of Greater Boston who lives in Denver, has been visiting relatives before returning home. He chatted with well-wishers and had his picture taken at the beach he has called his favorite. Jennifer Beke of Westfield, N.J., snapped a picture of Myers with Continue reading >>>

The Improper Bostonian is fun and quirky

Print this Article Email this Article They had me at the lobster-shaped Adirondack chairs. Or maybe it was the totally random bathtub in the corner, guarded over quasi-menacingly by a bouncer, or the marked-up bar (complete with several dozen proclamations of highly questionable love featuring even more questionable grammar).Bottom line is, The Improper Bostonian in Dennisport is darn fun, darn quirky and definitely a place I plan to hit a few more times before the sweet strains of summer fade away entirely. One Continue reading >>>

Chad Johnson Twitter Goes Silent After Turbulent Week; Report on an Affair with …

(Photo : RETUERS/Piotr Sikora/VH1/Handout) Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson and wife Evelyn Lozada are shown in this undated publicity photograph from the now-cancelled VH1 reality TV series "Ev Ocho" released to Reuters August 13, 2012. Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson has been getting a lot of attention these days but not for good reasons. The former Miami Dolphins wide receiver was fired from the team in the wake of his arrest for allegedly head-butting Evelyn Lozada, her new spouse. Although the team announced that the reason Johnson got fired had nothing to do with his arrest but rather with not Continue reading >>>

Tobey Maguire films in WGBH studios

Tobey Maguire was at the WGBH studios Wednesday, but, alas, not to sit down with Emily Rooney on “Greater Boston.” The actor was there to shoot a scene for “Labor Day,” director Jason Reitman’s film based on Joyce Maynard’s book. Maguire filmed a scene with actor Gattlin Griffith, who plays the younger version of Maguire’s character. We’re told the crew cleared out in time for Rooney to tape Wednesday’s episode of “Greater Boston.”

Uber Gets The Green Light In Boston, With Help From The Massachusetts …

Yesterday, we reported that Uber had came under fire from the Division of Standards of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, receiving a cease and desist letter that sought to shut down its operations in the Greater Boston area. The issue has since been resolved, with an amended decision saying Uber was “not out of compliance with state law” and free to continue operating. At the heart of the dispute is Uber’s use of GPS location technology to pick up riders and determine appropriate fares. The Standards Division initially ruled that since the National Institute of Standards Continue reading >>>

My Meeting with Julia

On Sept. 10, 2001, WGBH's Emily Rooney interviewed Julia Child at her Cambridge home before she left the Boston area for California. Jared Bowen was the producer on the segment and shares this remembrance. Greater Boston reairs the interview on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. The medium-sized grey house on Irving Street in Cambridge was remarkably regular: small driveway, unassuming front door, smallish yard. I suppose I assumed that the house Julia Child lived in — and more importantly cooked and filmed in — would be as striking as her outsized spirit. But that was my only disappointment on a sunny late-summer Continue reading >>>
