Bridge North Span Shipping Up to Boston

The final piece of the deconstruction of the Memorial Bridge will be completed on Saturday night when the north span is transported to East Boston. According to Carol Morris, a spokesperson with Archer Western Contractors, the Cape Cod barge will transport the north span from Portsmouth Harbor to a metal recycling facility in the Greater Boston area on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Morris said seas and winds are expected to become more favorable on Saturday afternoon, which will make it easier for Archer Western Contractors to transport the north span. The middle lift span and south span were previously Continue reading >>>

Runners put in marathon effort in London

Published on Saturday 28 April 2012 12:48 AFTER pounding the streets of London for 26 miles on Sunday, these marathon men could be forgiven for having a bit of a rest this week – especially as they raised thousands of pounds for charity with their efforts. Boston men David Hill, Spencer Kirk and Robert Gray all raised at least £1,000 for their chosen charities by taking Continue reading >>>

In search of a top-notch nanny

“Almost all nannies start with their families — the families that employ them — within three months of a child’s birth,” said Susan Tokayer, a veteran social worker and co-president of INA. “So there is a steady supply, if you will, of new clients. And I would say the Boston area is an excellent example of a rich, fertile, market for nannies,” thanks in part to a young, well-educated populace and an array of local industries.

Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus to have intergenerational concert in Wellesley

For Wellesley resident Dr. Robert Ferrell, Monday nights are sacrosanct. That’s when he and roughly 70 other men from all around Greater Boston rehearse with Boston Saengerfest Men’s Chorus. The non-profit ensemble, which performs repertoire ranging from Bach to Broadway and is now celebrating its 20th season, has a devoted following and has toured extensively in Canada and Great Britain, in addition to performances here.    However, it’s not just about artistic glory for Ferrell and his fellow singers in the chorus. A critical part of Saengerfest’s mission is to raise funds for Continue reading >>>

This week’s new live music

Oneohtrix Point Never, GlasgowDrone resides somewhere between industrial noise and ambient; musically speaking it's a halfway house near both the shit and the fan. From this unpromising locale, Daniel Lopatin – a Brooklyn-based Bostonian who records as Oneohtrix Point Never – has in the past couple of years run to a pair of superb electronic albums, Returnal and Replica, that combine Tangerine Dream-like kosmische synth repetition, evocative chording, and occasional bursts of noise. Replica, a concept of sorts, incorporates snippets of commercials into his swells of electronic drifting, Continue reading >>>

How Does Melrose’s State Education Funding Compare?

Chapter 70 funding is complicated and contentious, which makes for a controversial topic in most communities. The funding is given to every Commonwealth community by the state each year to help pay for education costs. Essentially, the state uses a formula to determine how much it’ll cost a community to educate its kids. Then it determines how much the community can raise in property taxes to pay for education. The state aid given is used to cover the difference. Communities can chip in more to educate kids without hurting its Chapter 70 funding total; the whole exercise is done to make sure Continue reading >>>

Confessions of a former Boston Red Sox fan – why I hope my baseball team have …

Fenway Park - home to the Boston Red SoxCormac Eklof recently used his IrishCentral blog to attack Red Sox fans for their disgraceful behavior at Fenway Park during a game last week. Under a new manager, Bobby Valentine, and beset with injury problems, the Sox are off to a lousy start and their extremely upset fans are lashing out at all those whom they hold responsible. It is at times like these that I am glad to be away from Boston’s sports talk radio stations and their legions of angry callers. These rather sad individuals whose outlook on life is invariably shaped by the fortunes of the Continue reading >>>
