Why You Should Be Rooting for the Patriots

As a born and bred Bostonian, it comes as no surprise where my allegiances will lie this Sunday. But for you football fans out there not so fortunate as to have your favorite squad in the granddaddy of them all, let me convince you as to why the (morally) right call is to root for New England in Super Bowl XVLI. As an American, its borderline sacrilegious not to pull for the Patriots. I mean, they’re the Patriots. Patriots won us our freedom, taking down the “giant” and tyrant King George III and Great Britain (pun obviously intended). If that had you convinced, great, but to be completely Continue reading >>>

Suicides increase statewide and spike in Plymouth County

Whether they’re blamed on despair over the economy, depression or drug problems, suicides in the state are on the rise and spiked sharply in Plymouth County and some South Shore towns. Scituate has lost 12 residents to suicide in the last three years, and in Marshfield, 13 people have taken their own lives in the last four years, according to the latest suicide data released from the state Department of Public Health and documents obtained by The Patriot Ledger. The suicide prevention group Samaritans reported that their crisis calls are also up significantly in the state. “More than Continue reading >>>

Mustangs riding high in Bay State

Norwood did its best to take control of the Bay State Conference early in its battle of division leaders against Needham. Dan Wiseman and Mike Murray scored 22 seconds apart in the first period and the Mustangs never were caught in a 4-3 victory Wednesday night. The Mustangs (10-2-4 overall) are the lone unbeaten team left in the BSC. Brendan Cathcart and Mark Powers added goals for Norwood, which was able to hold on after the Rockets pulled within a goal with 12.4 seconds to play. Elsewhere in the BSC, David Fasano and Tom Mahoney scored and Braintree (10-2-2) locked up a playoff spot by Continue reading >>>

Bigger, bolder plan for Herald site

The Boston Herald’s newly vacated South End headquarters, its reporters gone and its printing presses shuttered, is slated to be transformed into the “Ink Block,’’ a six-acre complex of apartments, stores, and restaurants. The property’s new owner, National Development, yesterday outlined a plan to replace the Herald’s squat brick building with four new structures containing 475 apartments, a grocery store, and a mix of smaller shops and restaurants. The proposal came days after the tabloid moved its offices to the Seaport District and began paying The Continue reading >>>

The good, bad and sad performing in St Kilda

WHEN Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire turns his attention to low-cost housing in America and what happens between the walls, class distinctions come to the fore. His play, Good People, will be performed by Red Stitch Actors Theatre in St Kilda from February 3. Andrea Swifte plays Margie, a South Bostonian from a low socio-economic area. Born and bred a “Southie”, Margie is poor after her job is made redundant. Margie needs all the good people she can find. Swifte said the Good People title referred to the genuine characters and people who would cut you a break Continue reading >>>

A Patriots’ Perspective: Why New England Will Win Super Bowl XLVI

Take a short drive south from Foxboro and it’s just a few hours before you enter the state of New Jersey and just a few miles later you will encounter a brilliant football coach. A man who faced adversity, was nearly fired and bounced back to become a Super Bowl Champion. I speak, of course, about the great Vince Lombardi. Every time my wife and I drive south on I-95 we celebrate surviving the horror show that is driving through NYC by stopping at the Vince Lombardi Rest Area along the New Jersey Turnpike for a quick bite to eat. (Travel note: It’s really a lovely rest area, located Continue reading >>>

Live TV Orchestrated by a One-Man Band

HAMILTON, N.J.: As the name implies, Integrated Production Systems (IPS) integrate all the functionality needed for a live HD broadcast—like motion graphics, effects and titles, mixing audio, rolling in clips, multi-viewer monitoring and robotic camera control—into a single system. Since all tools are accessible from a single interface, a "one-man band" can run the whole show. Mountain Lake PBS installed its new Broadcast Pix Granite 5000 live Continue reading >>>
