Boston’s ArtWeek returns with much more to do

ArtWeek, a 10-day celebration of arts and culture in Boston and beyond, will take place in a fall edition Sept. 26-Oct. 5 featuring 77 new events and an expansion into 27 Greater Boston neighborhoods and nearby towns. The collaborations involve more than 130 organizations. Historic statues will be restored

The lion and unicorn statues on the Old State House were lowered from their perches on Sunday morning for repairs and restoration and will be reinstalled in October. A time capsule, believed to have been sealed within the lion’s head for 113 years, may have come down with the statues as well. The Bostonian Society, tasked with preserving the building since 1881, said that the statues’ removal went smoothly. Old State House statue could include time capsule – WHDH

BOSTON (WHDH) - Two historic statues are going to get a major facelift, but not before creating some buzz. The famed Golden Lion and Silver Unicorn statues have graced the corners of the building since 1901. Crews worked Sunday take own two historic statues at the old State House so they can get ready for renovations. Construction crews used a crane to gently remove the large copper statues, lowering them to the ground, and into wooden crates. A century-old city legend may become a reality Sunday. The gold lion and silver unicorn statues are being taken down from Boston’s Old State House for repairs, and a storied time capsule hidden inside the lion may finally be revealed. As a part of a restoration project courtesy of The Bostonian Society, the statues will be lowered from the facade of the Freedom Trail landmark for some basic maintenance. Once lowered, the statues will be sent on Monday morning to Woburn’s Skylight Studios, Inc. for both restoration and inspection by conservator Robert Shure.
