Greater Bostonian: A Shot for Life

For Mike Slonina, the basketball court has always been a world of its own. And so, just before his senior year at Catholic Memorial, Mike came here to the school gym after his mother shared the worst news of his life. “She said they found a brain tumor and they think it’s brain cancer,” said Slonina. “They told her, she’s a photographer, they told her to cancel all of her photography jobs for the next three months because they don’t know what’s going to happen.” Mike’s mom, who raised him on her own, might not see him graduate high school. He felt helpless. Then, he came up with Continue reading >>>

‘Improper Bostonian’ got picture of Bill Belichick in a field, smiling

Feels like it should be said in a hushed, Steve Irwin-esque voice, but there exists a picture of Bill Belichick standing in a field, soaking in the sun and smiling. This rare beast comes courtesy of Improper Bostonian, a magazine that convinced the Patriots coach to pose for its cover and open up about his personal life. The story itself is actually very much worth a read, mainly because it's not about football. In the feature, Belichick talks about his work with the "Bill Belichick Foundation" (remember when he was wearing his own sweatshirt -- that's what was featured on the hoodie). Olympic-sized regrets from Beijing

BEIJING – I’m sad for my city this week. The Olympics will not be coming to Boston. It’s a disappointing result for a big Games supporter like myself, but that’s not the reason for my sadness. What’s bringing me down is how we said “No.” Living as an expat necessarily gives me a different perspective on my home town. It’s one of the common bonds that all of us who live (or have lived) overseas share. We’re all insiders who’ve become outsiders looking in on the motherland at events as they unfold. Far from being unpatriotic, though, how and where we have chosen to live Continue reading >>>
