Ice climbers ascend Iowa silos’ challenging, man-made frozen walls

Money 23 hours ago Necessity may be the mother of invention, but cold weather and regional architecture inspired a special invention of their own in Iowa —grain silo ice climbing. While we don’t know which weather-weary Bostonian just invented the sport of jumping into snow piles, we do know which rock climber came up with the idea of covering an Iowa grain silo with ice and then inviting the public to scale it.That climber is Don Briggs, an outdoor-pursuits professor at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, who came up with the idea Continue reading >>>

Small Banks Overcome Handicaps to Blaze Tech Trails

Across the country, community banks are defying the stereotype of small institutions as technological laggards, sometimes introducing useful digital features well ahead of the better-resourced and purportedly savvier big banks.Take Wintrust Financial in the Chicago area, for example. It is the first U.S. bank to let customers use a mobile banking app rather than a physical card to get cash at the ATM. It's also one of the few examples of a bank taking channel integration beyond the pilot stage.Radius Bank in Boston is leading the charge in letting people use their smartphones' cameras Continue reading >>>

Boston must invest in the T, fix the real problems

One of the old Bostonian memes says that “the MBTA is the nation’s oldest mass transport system … and is still running like one.” Indeed, riding the T is like traveling to the past. Some subway cars date back to the 1960s and are old enough to deserve exhibition spotlights at one of the many museums in this historic city. History aside, however, the endearing allure of antiquity wears off after the umpteenth time a subway breaks down or is late. The onslaught of snow storms this year has finally called enough attention to the exasperating mismatch between this outdated 20th century transit Continue reading >>>

53 Times Leslie Knope Was an Evident DGAF Empress

So, in light of Tuesday’s series finale that will likely bring America to tears, we’re honoring Parks and Rec‘s leading lady as the most dominant, self-confident, DGAF character on TV. Here are all the times Leslie Knope just got us. 1. On cheating: “I took your idea and made it better.” 2. On conduct: “Sit tight? Take a beat? Relax? I don’t really do any of those things.” 3. On self-actualization: “I would like a glass of red wine, and I’ll take the cheapest one you have because I can’t tell the difference.” 4. On culture: “I am not singing ‘Beauty School Dropout.’ Continue reading >>>

If You Park in a Spot You Didn’t Shovel in Boston, You Might Wake Up to Find …

Don’t mess with a Bostonian’s winter parking space — or else things could get really ugly. In a winter of absolutely massive snowfall, the people of Boston are going to great lengths to protect their hard-shoveled parking spaces and, as WHDH-TV reported, sometimes those lengths are criminal. A smashed car window with the words “Not OK” scratched in the paint below, the result of a Bostonian taking revenge on someone who took their shoveled-out parking space. After enduring three major snowstorms in a matter of weeks, winter-weary Bostonian Kate Gonso had been stuck in the house and was desperate for some entertainment. Dot poet Liam Day pens collection on T experiences

Lifelong Bostonian Liam Day recently released “Afforded Permanence,” a collection of poems that reflects a lifetime of experience riding on MBTA bus routes. Readers of “Afforded Permanence” will travel through the life of a Bostonian in experience and thought. Day, 42, was born in an Irish-American home in West Roxbury and now lives with his wife on Jones Hill. He began writing poetry during graduate study at Middlebury College and continued at the craft because, he says, “In many ways writing is a type of therapy.” Before earning his master’s in English literature, Day studied Continue reading >>>

To Park Or Not To Park: A Bostonian’s Guide To Street Etiquette

It was a moment of pure, unadulterated despair and anguish. I stood there in my driveway, having just taken upward of two hours to shovel it out—pom-pom hat clad, shovel in hand, and white powder on my sweatpants indicating the snow was up to my mid-thigh. I stood there looking like a sad puppy, forced to bathe after playing in a puddle of mud. I discovered that someone parked in the middle of Gerald Rd., blocking my driveway so that I could not swing my car out. I don’t know what made me angrier—the blatant disregard for my work, or that my long-anticipated Chipotle divulgence would have Continue reading >>>
